AI for patient handouts, discharge instructions and client messages

Clinics are using AI to write the things patients and pet owners take home: plain-language handouts, discharge sheets, translated explanations and friendly replies to texts. These are real practices (a plastic surgeon, an optometrist and veterinary clinics); results are self-reported or as reported, and every one has a clinician checking the output.

How to choose and set it up

  1. Keep names, contact details and record numbers out of consumer AI tools, or use a HIPAA-compliant tool with a signed agreement.
  2. Start from your own notes or dictation; ask AI to rewrite, not to add medical advice.
  3. Set hard rules in the prompt: no doses by text, no guarantees, call or go to the ER for warning signs.
  4. Write at a sixth-grade reading level and give it to patients in a form they can find later (a link or PDF).
  5. Read every output before it goes out, and check that nothing from the exam was dropped.

Questions

Is it safe to use ChatGPT for patient materials?

For generic templates and handouts, yes, with review. The practices below keep patient-identifying details out of consumer tools and personalize in their own systems.

How much time does it save?

Self-reported: one solo vet says dictated discharges save 10–15 minutes each; a plastic surgeon says he made five handouts in under 15 minutes total, when one care sheet used to take 30.

Can it translate for patients?

One Alberta vet had ChatGPT translate a diagnosis and treatment plan into Ukrainian after reviewing the English version; the client 'fully understood' (as reported). Translating back into English is an easy check.
