Turn eye-exam jargon into plain patient explanations with Gemini in Gmail

who Dr. Kelly Campbell, owner of Family Vision Care of Ponca City, a general optometry practice in Ponca City, Oklahoma, in a Google public-policy story

What it does

In Gmail she asks Gemini for things like "explain astigmatism in simple terms" or an explanation that stresses why clear vision matters for reading, and gets several ways to say it at the patient's level. She also uses Gemini to help create graphics for the practice's social media, and it helped her polish and condense the policy manual so it was less overwhelming for staff.

The problem

Clinical terms like astigmatism are hard to explain, and her old go-to analogy ("your eye is shaped like a football") didn't always get the point across.

What happened

She says the difference in patient reception has been noticeable in email and in person: "People seem to grasp the information better, which leads to more productive discussions about their care." She says the social graphics save her countless hours she used to spend searching the internet for visuals. No patient or revenue numbers are given.

How to set it up yourself

  1. What Dr. Campbell used: Gemini in Gmail to rephrase clinical explanations for patients, Gemini to help make social media graphics, and Gemini to polish and condense her staff policy manual.
  2. Write your own short explanation of the condition first (for example astigmatism or a new glasses prescription), with no patient name, birth date or chart details. Paste it into Gemini with the prompt below and pick the version that fits the patient.
  3. To draft the patient email in Gmail: click Compose (or reply to the patient's email), type your rough explanation, enter your instruction in the prompt bar (click Help me write if you can't see it) and click Create. Use Shorten or Friendly to adjust it, then read it for clinical accuracy before you send. Help me write needs an eligible Google AI plan, or a personal Google account in the US.
  4. For a policy manual, paste one section at a time into Gemini and ask it to condense the section into short, plain steps for staff without changing any rule. Compare it with the original before you replace anything.

Copy-paste prompt

I'm an {PROFESSION, e.g. optometrist} at {PRACTICE NAME}. Explain {CONDITION OR TEST, e.g. astigmatism} to a patient who is {PATIENT CONTEXT, e.g. the parent of a 10-year-old, a retiree who reads a lot}. Give three versions: one everyday analogy, one that explains why it matters for {WHAT THEY CARE ABOUT, e.g. reading, night driving}, and a two-sentence version for a follow-up email. Use only the facts in my note, don't add treatment advice, and keep each under 120 words. My note: {YOUR PLAIN EXPLANATION}.
