What's the Best Way for a Restaurant to Use AI to Reply to Google and Yelp Reviews? 5 Real Restaurants (2026)

Updated October 27, 2026 · 5 sourced examples · Cali BBQ's post was sponsored by Marqii · no paid placement

Short answer

The restaurants in our library use AI to draft the reply, not to post it: none says it lets AI reply on its own, and at Cali BBQ a person approves every one. Eric of Old Scratch Pizza in Dayton loaded examples of his restaurant's own writing into ChatGPT and Claude, and says the Google and Yelp replies come out thoughtful and kind. Mary Nguyen Aregoni of Saigon Sisters in Chicago, whose first language isn't English, drafts review replies with Gemini and says it "saves so much time" (WBEZ). Shawn Walchef of Cali BBQ has Marqii draft each reply and says approving one takes seconds (his post was sponsored by Marqii). Two more use AI around the reply: Mattenga's Pizzeria texts every online-order customer a review request, and Handcraft Burgers and Brews compares what guests say in reviews with its own brand copy.

Key takeaways
  • Our library has 5 restaurants using AI on reviews: Old Scratch Pizza, Saigon Sisters, Cali BBQ, Mattenga's Pizzeria and Handcraft Burgers and Brews.
  • 2 stories are owner-told (Old Scratch Pizza, Cali BBQ) and 3 come from press coverage (WBEZ, Axios San Antonio, Restaurant Dive). Cali BBQ's post was sponsored by Marqii, the tool it describes.
  • A general AI chat tool is enough to start. Old Scratch Pizza uses ChatGPT and Claude, and Saigon Sisters uses Gemini, which its owner says costs about $25 a month.
  • Teach it your voice first. Old Scratch Pizza uploaded lots of examples of its own writing so replies sound like the restaurant, not like a template.
  • Keep a person on every reply. At Cali BBQ a person approves and sends each draft, and none of these restaurants says it lets AI post on its own.

How do restaurants use AI to draft review replies?

The cheapest version uses a general AI chat tool. Eric, owner of Old Scratch Pizza in Dayton, Ohio, says his team uploaded lots of examples of its writing and brand voice into ChatGPT and Claude, which now quickly create replies to Google and Yelp reviews, along with first drafts of social posts and email promotions, per a Toast Community AMA.

Mary Nguyen Aregoni of Saigon Sisters in Chicago's West Loop uses Gemini to draft replies to reviews and emails. English isn't her first language, and she says help with drafting correspondence "saves so much time," per WBEZ Chicago. A suggestion from her case: write your notes in whichever language is easiest and ask for the reply in English.

Do I need a review-management tool, or is ChatGPT enough?

Two of the three restaurants that use AI to write replies do it in a general chat tool: ChatGPT and Claude at Old Scratch Pizza, Gemini at Saigon Sisters. You copy the review in, read the draft and post it yourself.

Cali BBQ uses a review tool instead. Owner Shawn Walchef replied to every Yelp, Google and Facebook review himself for nearly a decade, then handed it to his events director as the business grew. Marqii's suggested-response feature now drafts on-brand replies, and a person approves and sends each one, per his Restaurant Technology Substack. That post was sponsored by Marqii, and we haven't checked Marqii's price.

Should AI answer negative reviews?

It can draft them, but a person should decide what goes out. Cali BBQ's drafts cover positive, negative and neutral reviews, and every one is approved by a person before it posts.

Our suggestion, from the steps on these cases: answer anything about illness, injury or a refund personally rather than with a stock reply, and keep a manager on negative reviews even when AI writes the first draft.

Can AI help a restaurant get more Google reviews?

Mattenga's Pizzeria, a San Antonio pizzeria chain, uses Owner.com to run its website, online ordering and app, and the system texts customers after each online order asking for a review. Co-owner Hengam Stanfield credits it with lifting the restaurant's Google ratings: "Now all of our locations are 4.5 plus," per Axios San Antonio.

What else can AI do with your reviews?

Read them in bulk. David Ciancio, co-founder and CMO of Handcraft Burgers and Brews in New York City, recommends feeding written guest reviews into ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini and comparing the themes guests use with the restaurant's own brand messaging, then fixing the copy or the operations behind the gap, per Restaurant Dive. It needs a sizable set of reviews to be useful.

Guest review themes compared with your brand copy: Handcraft Burgers and Brews (New York City, press)

who David Ciancio (Rev), co-founder and CMO of Handcraft Burgers and Brews (Bryant Park, New York City), speaking on an NRA Show panel reported by Restaurant Dive

Tools: ChatGPT, Claude, Google Gemini, Yelp, Google reviews, TripAdvisor · Job: Paste Yelp and Google reviews into ChatGPT or Claude and compare them to your brand copy so the story guests tell matches the story you tell

What it does: Ciancio recommends feeding written guest reviews into agentic LLMs such as ChatGPT, Claude or Google Gemini, then comparing the themes guests use to describe the restaurant against the restaurant's own brand messaging. Operators use the gaps to rewrite messaging (or fix operations) so brand identity lines up with guests' emotional associations. The approach needs a sizable review dataset; panelist Kenneth Scharlatt of Savage Orchid Hospitality echoed that guest perception must match the brand you think you built.

Reported: Process guidance from a named operator on a trade-press panel—no Handcraft-specific revenue or traffic lift is published in the Restaurant Dive article for this LLM review workflow alone.

How to start this week

  1. Collect 10 to 20 review replies, posts or emails you're proud of. They teach the AI your restaurant's voice.
  2. In ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini, start a project, upload those examples and add instructions: your sign-off, how you thank regulars, and what you offer when something went wrong.
  3. For each new review, paste the review text in, read the draft, fix anything that isn't true, and post it yourself from your Google Business Profile or Yelp for Business account.
  4. Handle anything about illness, injury or a refund personally rather than with a drafted reply.
  5. If you want more reviews, add a one-sentence review request with a direct link to your Google review form to your online-order follow-up, the way Mattenga's does (our suggestion, based on these cases).
