Predict each customer's next oil-change date from their records so the advisor can book it at the counter

who Joe Schindler, owner of Schindler's Garage, an auto repair shop in Floyds Knobs, Indiana, as a guest on The Auto Repair Marketing Podcast

What it does

He built a Chrome extension that reads Carfax and the shop's own records and predicts, from each customer's driving habits, the date they will hit their next oil-change mileage, so the service advisor can book that appointment before the customer leaves. He drafted it in ChatGPT first and then moved to Claude, where he now does most of his work. Separately, the AI built into his CRM and phone system (AppFueled) turns each recorded call into notes so appointment requests aren't forgotten, and scores each call on key service-advisor steps such as greeting, asking the caller's name and asking for the appointment. He is also building a Claude-based assistant trained on his own writing and years of class recordings; that project is still in progress.

Tools

ChatGPT, Claude, Tekmetric, Carfax, AppFueled, Chrome extension (self-built)

The problem

Customers leave without their next service booked, and his shop management system, Tekmetric, has no easy way to connect outside tools.

What happened

For regular customers with enough records, he says the prediction is "within 3 days" of when they'll be due if they keep their habits. No booking or revenue figures. Self-reported.

How to set it up yourself

  1. What Schindler's Garage did: a self-built Chrome extension estimates each customer's next oil-change date from Carfax and shop records, built first in ChatGPT and then in Claude.
  2. Start without code: export a regular customer's visit history (dates and mileage) and paste it into ChatGPT or Claude with the prompt below to get an estimated due date.
  3. Check the estimate against the next actual visit for a few customers before you trust it, then have the advisor offer that date at checkout.
  4. Only then ask Claude to help you turn it into a small browser tool. Schindler's advice: build it in ChatGPT first, then move it to Claude.
  5. If your phone system or CRM already records calls, turn on its AI call notes and review a few scored calls a week with your advisors.

Copy-paste prompt

Here is a customer's service history from my auto repair shop: {DATE, MILEAGE} for each visit. Their oil-change interval is {MILES} miles. 1) Work out their average miles per day from this history. 2) Estimate the date they'll reach their next oil-change mileage, and give a range if their driving varies. 3) Write one sentence my service advisor can say at checkout to book that appointment. Show your math, and say if there aren't enough visits to estimate reliably.
