Run each estimate past ChatGPT before you send it to catch missed parts and markup
Craig Timm, owner of Handyman Timm, a one-man handyman business in Lake County, California, on The Handyman Roadshow podcast
He runs his estimates through ChatGPT to see if they're on target with what he's doing and what others charge. It points out the areas he forgets, like markup or a part he's left out, and on the estimates he has run through it, it always adds about 30% to certain areas. He has started marking up his materials as a result.

The problem
A solo handyman kept coming up short on jobs because his estimates missed things such as markup on materials or a part he forgot.
What happened
He says that on the jobs where he has tested it, he's "coming out on top and not coming up short like I have been", and that it helps him grow. He treats it as a trial, not a final answer. Self-reported.

How to set it up yourself
- What Handyman Timm does: before sending an estimate, the owner pastes it into ChatGPT to check whether it's on target; it flags forgotten parts and missing markup, and he adjusts, then compares how the job actually comes out.
- Write your rules down once (hourly rate, minimum, material markup, trip or disposal fees) and paste them into a ChatGPT project's instructions so the check is against your numbers.
- For each estimate, paste the line items and a short description of the job with the prompt below. Look at what it flags and decide for each one whether it's real for this job.
- After the job, note the actual hours and materials next to the estimate. If its padding keeps proving right on one kind of job, change your price list; if not, ignore it. Don't use its idea of what others charge as a price.
Copy-paste prompt
Check this handyman estimate before I send it. Job: {SHORT DESCRIPTION}. Line items: {LINE ITEMS WITH HOURS, MATERIALS AND PRICES}. My rules are in the project instructions. List: 1) parts, supplies or steps that are probably missing for this job, 2) where my labor hours look low for the work described, 3) whether markup, trip fees or disposal are left out, 4) anything a customer might misunderstand. Show the math for any change and don't change my hourly rate. The $39 Plumbing & HVAC AI Starter Kit has ready-to-use call scripts, missed-call texts, estimate follow-ups and review templates, built from 18 real, sourced setups.
