Photograph a part or a mess of wires on the job and ask ChatGPT for the model, part number and steps

who Craig Timm, owner of Handyman Timm, a one-man handyman business in Lake County, California, on The Handyman Roadshow podcast

What it does

When a customer's thermostat swap left loose wires, he photographed them and loaded the picture into ChatGPT, which gave him the model number and wiring schematic, asked for a photo of the heating unit, and then told him where every wire went. When he couldn't get a leaking bathroom faucet's handle off, he photographed it and ChatGPT gave him the repair part number and walked him through taking it apart. He uses the same photo search to find repair parts for older houses and who sells them.

The problem

Older houses mean unfamiliar fixtures, missing model numbers and repair parts that are hard to find, and a stuck repair can eat hours on the job or an evening at the computer.

What happened

He says the thermostat was running within five minutes, and the faucet, "a 4-hour job that I was dreading", took 30 minutes. Finding parts no longer means scrolling the computer all night. On the show, he and the host agree that AI sometimes gives wrong information, so you research further rather than taking it as the final answer. Self-reported.

How to set it up yourself

  1. What Handyman Timm does: on a stuck repair, the owner takes a photo, uploads it to ChatGPT and asks what it is, which part he needs and how to do the repair; for older houses he uses the same trick to find replacement parts and who sells them.
  2. Take clear photos: the model or rating label if there is one, the part from two angles, and for wiring, every terminal and wire color in focus. Upload them to the ChatGPT app with the prompt below.
  3. Before you act, check the answer against the manufacturer's manual or label it points you to; for thermostats and anything electrical, turn the power off first and confirm the wiring diagram matches the actual equipment.
  4. If it names a part, confirm the part number on the supplier's or manufacturer's site before ordering, and save the chat with the job notes for next time.

Copy-paste prompt

I'm a handyman on a job. Attached are photos of {WHAT IT IS, e.g. a bathroom faucet whose handle won't come off / thermostat wires that were disconnected}. Tell me: 1) the likely brand and model and how sure you are, 2) the part I probably need with its part number, 3) step-by-step how to do the repair, with any safety step first, and 4) what photo or label you'd need to be more certain. If you're guessing, say so.
