Let AI text back missed salon callers, answer the same recurring questions and hand off anyone who wants a person
Weena Jerome-Alexandre, owner of Renaissance Curls, a curly-hair salon in Harlem, New York, interviewed by Salon Today
TrueLark, an AI virtual receptionist, texts back missed callers and answers the recurring questions. She sent TrueLark her FAQs as the system learned how clients ask, and she and her team can watch how the AI answers and jump in when needed. She uses Boulevard for booking.

TrueLark
The problem
Coming out of the pandemic she was answering most incoming calls herself while seeing clients, texting callers from Google Voice between guests, and people who called at night often didn't reply by the time she messaged them the next morning.
What happened
She says the system fields 82% of incoming calls and brings in an average of 30 new clients a month, around $2,400 in additional revenue. Most clients love never having to talk to someone, she says, and for those who would rather speak to a human, "the AI can actually sense that, and tell the caller that someone from the front desk will reach out to them."

How to set it up yourself
- What Renaissance Curls uses: TrueLark, an AI receptionist that texts missed callers and answers common questions. She sent it her FAQs, and she and her team watch its answers and jump in when needed. TrueLark's price isn't checked here.
- Go through a week of missed calls and texts and list the questions that keep coming up (for example which service suits my curls, price, how long it takes, consultations). Use the prompt below to write short answers in your voice.
- DIY alternative: forward unanswered and after-hours calls to Smith.ai's AI Receptionist (free tier with 25 calls/mo; $150/mo for Pro) and paste your answers into its call script. Tell it that anyone who asks for a person gets a callback from the front desk.
- Each morning, read the overnight conversations, fix any answer that was wrong in your FAQ list, and call back everyone who asked for a person first thing.
Copy-paste prompt
Write short text-message answers for {SALON NAME}, a {SALON TYPE, e.g. curly hair} salon in {NEIGHBORHOOD}. First, the text sent after a missed call (under 160 characters, says who we are and asks how we can help). Then one answer under 300 characters for each question our callers ask: {QUESTIONS}. Use only these facts: services and prices {SERVICES}, hours {HOURS}, booking link {LINK}, policies {POLICIES}. If the caller asks for a person, seems upset, or asks something not covered here, reply that someone from the front desk will reach out today, and stop answering. One short email a day: 3 new AI use cases from real small businesses, each with its source and setup steps, plus a Tool of the Day.
