Use ChatGPT for document comparison, website copy and email redrafts at a solo law practice, with nothing confidential in the chat
Michelle Lee, an SRA-regulated solicitor who in 2025 started her own UK immigration law consultancy (Michelle Lee Immigration Lawyer) and handles every matter herself, on her own blog
ChatGPT compares documents, helps with website copy and redrafts low-stakes emails, with nothing confidential or identifiable about clients in the chat. It is almost never used for legal research, and any answer it gives there is only a starting point that gets checked.

ChatGPT
The problem
A solo immigration lawyer wanted to save time on low-stakes writing without risking client confidentiality or the fake-citation mistakes that have landed other lawyers in trouble.
What happened
She calls ChatGPT "a nerdy intern – well-meaning and highly knowledgeable, but to be carefully managed" and says the time saved is cost saved, which her clients benefit from too. When she had it write a blog post for comparison, the tone was too forceful and the spelling American, so it "simply doesn't read like me." Self-reported; no time figures are given.

How to set it up yourself
- What Michelle Lee does: ChatGPT polishes the wording of low-stakes emails and website copy and compares documents, with no confidential or identifying client details in the chat, and almost never does legal research; when it does, she checks the result.
- In ChatGPT, open Settings > Personalization > Custom instructions and add your style: British or American spelling, how formal you are, and phrases you never use. That fixes the Americanised, too-forceful tone she saw.
- Before pasting anything, replace names, dates of birth, reference numbers and case facts that could identify a client with placeholders, and turn off Settings > Data controls > Improve the model for everyone. Then use the prompt below for a redraft.
- Read every redraft against your original so the meaning, dates and promises haven't changed, and never use it for legal research you can't check against the rules, guidance or case law yourself.
Copy-paste prompt
Redraft this email from my law practice to {RECIPIENT TYPE, e.g. a prospective client}. My draft, with all names and identifying details replaced by placeholders: {DRAFT}. Goal: {GOAL, e.g. explain the next step and what documents I need}. Keep my meaning, dates and any promises exactly as they are; don't add legal advice, deadlines or rules I didn't write. Use {UK OR US} spelling and a {TONE, e.g. calm, plain-English} tone, keep it under {WORD LIMIT} words, and list anything in my draft that seems unclear instead of guessing. We set up one AI automation in your tools, live within 48 hours of getting access, for $197.
