Summarize client medical records and deposition transcripts with Copilot in Microsoft Edge at a personal-injury practice
Alan J. Klevan, owner of the Law Offices of Alan J. Klevan, P.C., a personal-injury and workers' compensation practice in Framingham, Massachusetts, in an ABA Law Technology Today roundtable
Copilot in Microsoft Edge summarizes OCR'd medical records and answers questions about injuries and dates, and summarizes deposition transcripts, flags inconsistent testimony and finds page-and-line references. The lawyer pastes what he needs into documents such as demand letters.

The problem
A trial lawyer receives many sets of documents, mostly medical records in PDF. Before Copilot he scanned them, ran OCR and did advanced searches for words and phrases to find what he needed.
What happened
"For the price, I'm a Copilot devotee," he says, because it works with Office 365 and Microsoft Edge. No time figures are given.

How to set it up yourself
- What the Law Offices of Alan J. Klevan does: OCR'd medical records and deposition transcripts open in Microsoft Edge, where Copilot summarizes them, answers questions about injuries and dates, flags inconsistencies in testimony and finds page-and-line references, which he pastes into documents like demand letters.
- Sign in to Edge and Copilot with a Microsoft Entra work account on a business plan. Microsoft's support page (Using Microsoft Copilot in Edge at work, checked 2026-10-21) says that gives you Enterprise Data Protection, so prompts and files aren't used to train the model. Don't use a personal account for client records.
- Run OCR on the PDF first, open it in Edge, select the Copilot icon in the Edge toolbar and accept the page-content prompt if it appears. Ask for a summary, then use the prompt below for injuries, dates and providers.
- Check every date, diagnosis and page:line reference against the record itself before it goes in a demand letter or a deposition outline; treat Copilot's list as an index, not evidence.
Copy-paste prompt
Using only this open PDF ({DOCUMENT TYPE, e.g. medical records from PROVIDER} for my client, referred to here as {CLIENT INITIALS}): 1) Summarize it in 10 bullet points. 2) List every injury, diagnosis and treatment with the date and the page it appears on. 3) List gaps in treatment longer than {NUMBER} days. 4) Quote any statement about how the injury happened, with the page. If something isn't in the document, say "not found" rather than guessing. For a deposition transcript, also list statements that contradict each other, with page and line numbers. We set up one AI automation in your tools, live within 48 hours of getting access, for $197.
