Snap a business card after a networking event and get the contact plus a follow-up email drafted

who Mitch Zoll, founder and principal attorney of Zoll Firm, PLLC (a solo business-law practice in Austin, Texas), in ABA Law Practice Magazine

What it does

He photographs a business card with the ChatGPT phone app and his own custom GPT reads the card so he can pull it into his contacts, looks at the person's role for a business connection to his practice, and drafts a personalized follow-up email for him to send. It is told never to open with "I hope this finds you well" and to offer to connect without being pushy about his services.

The problem

Business cards from networking events pile up, and writing a personal follow-up to each new contact takes time a solo lawyer can't bill for.

What happened

He describes it as one of the agents he uses daily and says the emails read "just like an email I would write after a networking event." He reviews and sends each one himself. No figures are given. Self-reported.

How to set it up yourself

  1. What Zoll Firm does: after an event, the founder photographs each business card in the ChatGPT app; his custom GPT reads the card, finds a business connection to his practice from the person's role and drafts a follow-up email in his voice, which he edits and sends. The steps below use a ChatGPT project, which does the same job.
  2. In ChatGPT, select New project in the sidebar, name it "Networking follow-up", and paste the prompt below under ••• > Project settings as the instructions. Add a short note on what your firm does and who refers you work, plus two follow-up emails you have written yourself so it copies your tone.
  3. After the event, open the project in the ChatGPT phone app, tap + to take a photo of each card and send it. Copy the contact details into your contacts or CRM, then check the name, firm and email against the card before using them.
  4. Edit the draft so it mentions something you actually talked about, and send it from your own email within a day or two. Log the contact and a reminder to check in again in your calendar or CRM.

Copy-paste prompt

I'm {YOUR NAME}, {WHAT YOUR FIRM DOES, e.g. a business lawyer in Austin who forms companies and reviews contracts}. Attached is a photo of a business card from {EVENT NAME}. 1) Pull out the contact details as: name, title, company, email, phone, website. Mark anything you can't read clearly as [CHECK]. 2) In one sentence, say how this person's role could connect to my work (referrals, their clients, or their own business). 3) Draft a follow-up email under 120 words from me that mentions {WHAT WE TALKED ABOUT}, offers to stay in touch and is not pushy about my services. Don't open with "I hope this finds you well" and don't invent details about the person or the conversation.
