Set up a Claude project for each case to summarize depositions and refresh pleadings before trial at a small personal-injury firm

who Erica B. Slater and Amy Collignon Gunn, founding partners of Gunn | Slater, a personal-injury firm in Clayton (St. Louis), Missouri, interviewed by Missouri Lawyers Media

What it does

The two partners use Claude Pro. With client consent and confidentiality measures in place, they set up projects that let them refresh or review the testimony and pleadings filed in a case. Slater also pastes a phrase or two sentences from a brief and asks for a tighter rewrite (editing only, not research or drafting). Gunn describes the case and an upcoming deposition, such as a corporate representative, and asks what questions it would ask, then writes her own real questions from the ideas it sparks. They chose Claude Pro because it isn't a large enterprise system and fits a small practice better.

The problem

Before trial, the partners need to get back on top of deposition testimony and pleadings fast. At a bigger firm, law clerks would summarize depositions line by line with page and line numbers.

What happened

Slater: "Whereas we might have law clerks summarize depositions line by line with page and line numbers of the concepts, I was able to do that in minutes or less," adding that it was pretty good and pretty accurate. She used AI on a case that ended in an eight-figure verdict. They don't use it for demand letters or anything very specific to clients because of confidentiality. Self-reported in a legal press interview.

How to set it up yourself

  1. What Gunn | Slater does: the partners set up Claude Pro projects for a case so they can summarize depositions and refresh testimony and pleadings before trial, and use it to tighten brief sentences and brainstorm deposition questions.
  2. Check your state bar's guidance on AI and confidentiality, and get client consent first, as this firm did. Decide what you will never upload (they keep demand letters and client-specific details out).
  3. Create one Claude project per case and add the deposition transcripts and pleadings you're allowed to use.
  4. Ask for a summary of each deposition by topic with page and line references (use the prompt below), then spot-check the references against the transcript before you rely on them.
  5. For a new deposition, describe the case and the witness and ask what questions it would ask. Keep only the ideas that hold up and write the real questions yourself, as Gunn does.

Copy-paste prompt

This project holds the deposition transcript of {WITNESS NAME} in {CASE DESCRIPTION}. Summarize the testimony by topic. For each topic give: what the witness said in one or two sentences, the page and line numbers, and any admissions or inconsistencies with the pleadings in this project. Quote exact words where they matter. If you can't find a page and line for a point, say so instead of guessing.
