Responding to customer messages on the store's social media sites was taking hours each week.

What happened

It saves hours each week responding to messages, per Hardware Retailing. The automatic messages are generic, a thank-you rather than an answer. "We are still trying to overcome our own paranoia, so we are moving slowly," Carson says; using AI for ordering and for answering customer questions online were hopes, not in use yet.

How to set it up yourself

1. What J-Town Hardware does: automatic AI messages thank customers who reach out on the store's social media, and AI helps create and schedule posts. Hardware Retailing doesn't name the tool, so the steps below are our DIY build with free Meta tools and ChatGPT.
2. In Meta Business Suite, open Inbox, select Automations, choose Instant reply, turn it on for Messenger and Instagram, write a short thank-you that says when a person will answer and gives your phone number for anything urgent, then select Save changes. Message your own Page from a personal account to test it.
3. Draft a week of posts in ChatGPT with the prompt below and edit them, then schedule them in Meta Business Suite: open Planner, select Create post, pick your Facebook Page and Instagram account, turn on Set date and time, and select Schedule.
4. Keep a person on the inbox: the instant reply only says thanks, so someone still answers the real question the same day.

Write {NUMBER} social media posts for {STORE NAME}, an independent hardware store in {TOWN}. This week: {PRODUCTS, SALES, EVENTS AND SEASONAL PROJECTS}. Store hours: {HOURS}. Voice: friendly, local and practical, no hype. Keep each post under 60 words with one call to action (visit, call {PHONE} or message us). Use only the products, prices and dates I list; if you need a detail I didn't give, write [ASK] instead of guessing. Then write one two-sentence instant reply that thanks people for messaging and says when we'll answer.
