Have Claude draft demand letters and case summaries from your own research and anonymized facts

who Alexander Paykin, managing director of Paykin Law (The Law Office of Alexander Paykin, P.C.), a New York commercial litigation and real estate firm, in an ABA Law Technology Today roundtable

What it does

Claude drafts demand letters and case summaries, and tightens arguments built from statutes and case law the lawyer has already researched by hand. Confidential matters go in only after checking the platform's terms, or as an anonymized hypothetical with names and basic facts changed.

Tool cost

The problem

Drafting takes a lawyer's time, AI legal research tools still miss the nuance of a question, and ChatGPT invented facts and hallucinated citations too often for his legal work.

What happened

He says simpler drafting, from demand letters to case summaries, now takes at least 50% less time. On motions and briefs it doesn't save him time overall, but it has often improved the eloquence or clarity of his papers. Self-reported.

How to set it up yourself

  1. What Paykin Law does: the lawyer researches by hand, then gives Claude the authorities he's chosen, or an anonymized version of the facts, and has it draft demand letters and case summaries or tighten an argument; he cross-checks and edits everything.
  2. Before any client matter goes in, read Claude's current terms and privacy settings for your plan, and decide what can go in as-is and what must be anonymized. Paykin suggests changing names and basic facts into a hypothetical that mirrors the case.
  3. In Claude, open Projects > New project, name it "Demand letters", upload one or two of your own past letters with client details removed as style examples, and add the prompt below as the project instructions.
  4. For each letter, paste the anonymized facts and only the statutes and cases you've already read and confirmed. Swap the real names and details back in yourself, then check every citation, amount and date against your file before it's signed.

Copy-paste prompt

Draft a demand letter for my {PRACTICE AREA, e.g. commercial} matter. Facts, anonymized: {FACTS WITH PLACEHOLDER NAMES}. Amount demanded and basis: {AMOUNT AND BASIS}. Deadline to respond: {DEADLINE}. Authorities I have already confirmed and want cited, with the point each supports: {STATUTES AND CASES}. Use only these authorities and facts; don't add any case, statute, quotation or fact I didn't give you, and mark anything you think is missing as [NEEDS INPUT]. Match the tone and structure of the example letters in this project, keep it under {PAGE LIMIT} pages, and end with the response deadline and how to reach me.
