Have an AI agent write the rule that picks the cheapest shipping box for every order

who Hagan Walker, co-founder of Glo Pals, a light-up toy brand started by Mississippi State University students, in Fortune

What it does

An AI agent wrote the algorithm that picks the cheapest box size for each order. The company also uses an agent to analyze its ad data across Google and Meta.

Setup

Medium · or we set it up for $197

Tools

AI agent (not named)

The problem

Every order ships in a box someone has to choose, and an oversized box costs more to ship.

What happened

The box-picking algorithm is in use; Fortune gives no savings figure. AI also built the theme for the company's website, after three months of iterations. Walker keeps anything copyrighted or illustrative made by a person.

How to set it up yourself

  1. What Glo Pals uses: an AI agent (Fortune doesn't name it) wrote the algorithm that picks the cheapest box per order. The steps below are our DIY build of the same rule with ChatGPT or Claude and a spreadsheet.
  2. Make a Google Sheet with one tab for your boxes (inside length, width, height, box cost) and one for your products (packed dimensions and weight). Export a week of orders with the items in each order from your store as a CSV.
  3. Paste the prompt below into ChatGPT or Claude with both tabs and your carrier's dimensional-weight rule, and ask for a Google Sheets formula or Apps Script function that returns the cheapest box for each order. Paste it into the orders tab.
  4. Test it on 20 past orders by hand: pack each one in the box it picks. Fix any case where items wouldn't fit, then have the packer use the box column for a week before you trust it fully.

Copy-paste prompt

Write a Google Apps Script function for my {STORE TYPE} shop that picks the cheapest shipping box for each order. Boxes (name, inside L×W×H in inches, cost): {BOX LIST}. Products (SKU, packed L×W×H, weight in lb): {PRODUCT LIST}. Carrier rule: dimensional weight = L×W×H ÷ {DIM DIVISOR}, billed on the greater of actual or dimensional weight, rates {RATE TABLE OR ZONE NOTE}. For an order (list of SKUs and quantities), return the box with the lowest box cost plus shipping that fits every item with {PADDING} inch of padding. If nothing fits, return 'SPLIT'. Explain your fit check in comments and don't invent any dimensions I didn't give.
