Give an online store its first phone support line with an AI voice agent that can look up and change orders
Eric Bandholz, founder of Beardbrand, a men's grooming brand selling through its own Shopify store, in his public posts on X
An xAI voice agent, built in about two days and speaking in Bandholz's own cloned voice, answers the main support line. It looks up order status and expected delivery, changes the address on unshipped orders, logs lost or damaged packages (older orders go to a person), and skips, reschedules or pauses Recharge subscriptions. For phone orders it builds a draft order and emails a secure checkout link, so no card numbers are taken by phone. A small Cloudflare Worker sits between the agent and Shopify so store keys never touch the AI. Order status needs two matching details; anything private or any change needs a 6-digit code emailed to the customer. It never reads back personal info, and anything it can't do becomes a message emailed to the team. Every call is logged on a dashboard inside Shopify admin.

The problem
Beardbrand had never offered phone support. Callers wanted order status, address changes and subscription changes, and an agent that reads order data can leak customer details if it trusts whoever is calling.
What happened
Self-reported: it is now Beardbrand's main support line. Voice costs 8 cents a minute, and the build used about 30–40% of a week's usage on his roughly $40/month X Premium+ plan. Early on, given a wrong name, it read back a stranger's name and email; that is why the verification rules exist. His advice: start with lookups only, keep keys away from the AI, and 'test like a scammer.' No call-volume numbers shared yet.

How to set it up yourself
- Start with read-only lookups (order status, delivery date) before allowing any changes.
- Put a small server between the voice agent and your store so the AI never holds your Shopify keys.
- Require two matching details for order status and an emailed one-time code before private info or changes.
- Never take card numbers by phone: have the agent email a checkout link instead.
- Call it yourself pretending to be someone else, and fix every leak before going live.
