Draft garden center blog posts with ChatGPT, but check every plant fact: its Japanese maple sizes were badly off

who Casey Schmidt (byline Casey Schmidt Ahl), conservation educator at Colonial Gardens, her family's independent garden center in Phoenixville, Pennsylvania, in a Garden Center magazine column

What it does

ChatGPT drafted a succulent-care blog post, which she edited to fit the store's product mix and best practices. Later it wrote descriptions and sizes for the store's 25 Japanese maple varieties within a set word count.

The problem

Constantly chasing SEO and running thin on time, she needed blog posts and plant descriptions for the website.

What happened

The blog draft "served its function and cut my writing time down," she writes. The Japanese maple descriptions didn't hold up: when she cross-checked the first tree, ChatGPT "got the size incredibly wrong," and accuracy across the others "varied wildly." She has since stopped using ChatGPT for blog posts, because she still has to edit and fact-check them and its energy and water use clashes with the garden center's sustainability values. Owner-told.

How to set it up yourself

  1. What Colonial Gardens did: ChatGPT drafted a succulent-care blog post that Casey Schmidt edited to fit the store's product mix, then wrote descriptions of 25 Japanese maple varieties whose sizes were badly off when she checked them. She has since stopped using it for blog posts.
  2. If you try it, give it your facts instead of asking it to remember them: paste your own plant tags, grower sheets or catalog sizes into ChatGPT with the prompt below, so it rewrites your data rather than inventing sizes.
  3. Check every size, zone and care claim against the tag or grower sheet before posting, and delete anything it added that isn't in your notes.
  4. Edit the draft to match what you actually stock and how your staff advise customers, then publish.

Copy-paste prompt

Write short website descriptions for these {PLANT TYPE} varieties we sell at {GARDEN CENTER NAME} in {REGION}. Use ONLY the facts in this data: {PASTE TAG OR GROWER DATA: VARIETY, MATURE HEIGHT AND WIDTH, ZONE, SUN, NOTES}. Write {WORD COUNT} words each. If a fact isn't in the data, write [MISSING] instead of filling it in. Don't add sizes, zones, toxicity or care claims from memory. End each with one line on why a customer might pick it.
