Draft a bookshop's newsletters, press texts and book reviews with AI writing tools and make event posters with image generators
Hanna Maschke, owner of Ton & Text, an independent bookshop in Oldenburg in Holstein, Germany, speaking at the annual meeting of the IG Unabhängiges Sortiment (independent booksellers' group), in Börsenblatt, the German book trade magazine
She told fellow booksellers how she works with AI writing programs such as Neuroflash, ChatGPT, JasperAI and DeepL Write for newsletters, press texts and book reviews. She often uses them for ideas too, for example asking how to make an event exciting enough that 120 children listen with curiosity. For visuals she works with Canva, Midjourney, Sora and DALL-E to make graphics, find photos and design posters.
ChatGPT Free $0; Go $8/mo; Plus $20/mo; Pro $100/mo. Jasper Pro $59/seat/mo billed annually ($69 monthly); 7-day free trial. Midjourney Basic $10/mo ($8/mo billed annually); Standard $30/mo. Neuroflash and DeepL Write aren't in our price data.

The problem
A small bookshop has to keep producing newsletters, press texts, book reviews, posters and ideas for events, on top of running the shop.
What happened
Self-reported (our translation from German): she sees time, staffing and cost savings in the tools, but "You have to prompt very precisely; the more precise, the better the results," learn the programs, follow the legal rules and, "very important, check the results for correctness, because in the end the AI doesn't carry the responsibility." No time figures are given.

How to set it up yourself
- What Ton & Text does: the owner drafts newsletters, press texts and book reviews with AI writing tools (Neuroflash, ChatGPT, JasperAI, DeepL Write), asks them for event ideas, and makes graphics and posters with Canva and image generators like Midjourney.
- Pick one writing tool you'll actually keep open (ChatGPT is enough to start) and give it a short note about your shop: town, regulars, tone, the kinds of books you push, and two past newsletters you liked.
- For each newsletter, press text or review, give it the facts (titles, dates, prices, the author's name) and your own two lines of opinion, and use the prompt below; check every name, date and plot detail before it goes out.
- For an event, ask for five ideas for the specific audience (say, 120 schoolchildren), pick one, then make the poster from your shop's template in Canva or an image generator.
